Oh what a relief! I definitely feel that it gets better as we go along.
It was kind of awkward letting you (the students) explore while I just
paced about. However, I feel more confident than my first lesson.
Marissa, It does feel awkward just pacing around, doesn't it? I suppose we'll get used to it. Good job on your lesson. I liked how you started with a review, as though we were your regular students. It was a nice touch. I liked that you were presenting both sides of the issue. It was quite evenhanded. I liked that you should this through the two different videos, although I wasn't overly fond of the videos, I found the styles distracting and off-putting. (It might be my age. I could see it being more relatable to teens.) I think the question might have been too big for a short lesson. There was a lot of material and documents to go through. Maybe too much. You may have been better off with a more specific question. I did appreciate all the primary sources, though. I'm a big fan of primary sources. It would also help to have more specific prompts and questions in mind during your scaffolding. You did a great job overall, though and especially in leading the discussion at the end. You got us all involved and engaged. and that's the whole point, right? Phil
Marissa, Even though you felt like a sitting duck while we did our exploring, we didn’t notice at all since we were all reading those primary sources, trying to answer your question. I feel that if we did this when we we’re actual teachers, it would be much easier to let us have at it because you’ll have plenty of other stuff you can be doing (grading papers, etc.)
I enjoyed your lesson, and I liked how you had the videos at the beginning. It helped us get a feel for what we would soon be doing. I wish that we had gone through each of the sources as a group, however, instead of doing everything individually. I didn’t want to say anything because that’s just how I am, but I feel that if we had gone through each source as a group, I would have felt a bit more comfortable with the content. If you prefer that we do it individually however, I think it might have been better if we each had a specific set of sources we were in charge of, and then we’d have to report out to the rest of the class. (Just an idea, take it or leave it). Also, in a class the size of 20 or more students, the option to work together or alone would probably work better because there are more people. We could even break off so that some of us worked in groups while others worked individually in a larger class.
Overall, I really enjoyed your lesson and you did a great job! Tiffany
Your lesson was nice. I like that it had to do with a topic which has different perspectives. One thing that made me feel a bit overwhelmed was the amount of information. That's just me as a college student, a high school student might feel a bit discouraged. The information was valuable and helped me understand who FDR stood for. The discussion went very well. It was cool that you didn't cut us off when we talked or when new ideas came to life while you guided the discussion. One thing that wouldve been super cool would be talking about something like Obama Care. I started thinking about it after class which means your lesson goes a long way and can be applied to issues of today.
